Rwanda and Uganda

Rwanda

One of the most amazing countries we visited in Africa. Yes, it is amazing because of the lush green hills, tea plantations and of course, the mountain gorillas. But I found it amazing because we were there less than 20 years after the 1994 genocide and the country felt like it had things more together than most other places I’ve been to. For a start, the first thing they checked when we entered the country was if we had any plastic bags because they are banned in Rwanda. They also have a monthly community clean-up day, Umuganda, which is why Rwanda is so clean. People don’t like talking about the genocide (understandably) and out of respect we didn’t ask questions unless given to us voluntarily. But we did learn more about the events surrounding it in addition to seeing the beautiful countryside.

Kigali: Modern (I know the photos don’t really show this), clean, hilly. That’s how I remember Kigali. Visit the Kigali Memorial Centre (which also has sections on other genocides), various sites throughout the city honouring those who lost their lives and Hotel Rwanda (not at all like the move depicts it).

The Gorillas: This is expensive, I won’t lie. I think we paid 400USD each when we saw them and it may have doubled since then. However, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity and so humbling, so if you can afford it, do it. You are likely to regret it later if you don’t. Truly amazing how close you get to the gorillas and just how much like people they are.

Nyungwe National Park: This park is famous for the chimpanzees. We didn’t see them however, as was just after the gorillas. The park itself is beautiful and you can do hikes, bird watching, etc., there are loads of monkeys, as well as the large tea plantations just outside the park.

Lake Kivu: Shared with the DRC, the lake is tranquil and you could spend many days just chilling out. ah

Uganda

By the time we reach Uganda we were running a little short on time so admittedly skipped through it, and is the reason why I don’t have a lot to tell you about, or photos.

Kampala: Crazy African capital city and traffic was a nightmare!

Jinja: Located on Lake Victoria and also next to the Nile (Victoria Nile), famously known as the source of the White Nile. Plenty to do, a lot centred around the river, such as rafting, bungee jumping, river cruises, etc.

A nice spot to hang out!
