South Africa and Zimbabwe

South Africa

South Africa is a country I will keep coming back to; it has so much to see and do, every trip is different from the last. During our time in Zambia we managed to get down to South Africa only the one time for a couple of weeks, and it was quite a touristy trip.

I’ve provided the best parts from that trip in this post, but I know there are lots of key attractions missing.

Cape Town: Where do I start? The Waterfront, Table Mountain, the coast, the quality and freshness of the food and produce, I can go on! For me this is the prettiest city I have been to, it really is stunning. Top that all off with some of the history and outdoor activities on offer and it’s easy to fill your time there.

Stellenbosch: We unfortunately didn’t get to spend much time in Stellenbosch (down side of doing a tour), so I would recommend having your own car and actually spending at least a couple of nights there. Even if you’re not much into wine, the town is lovely to wander around and the surrounds are beautiful

Johannesburg: Again, a place with so much to do and see and learn! It’s quite a spread out city so a car helps to get around. I loved the Apartheid Museum and the Cradle of Humankind/ Sterkfontein Caves, we spent hours and hours at both. But the city itself has a good vibe and plenty of energy and I think often cops a bad rap from people who have never been there and just assume.

Zimbabwe

We didn’t get to spend a lot of time in Zimbabwe; the little time we did spend there has definitely made me want to go back some day. While the infrastructure, cities, etc., felt like they had seen better days, the people were lovely and the country full of colour.

Victoria Falls (the town): Here we could see Victoria Falls from a different angle (some say this is the better view, personally I don’t think it matters which side you see them from) and visited the beautiful colonial Victoria Falls Hotel.

Matobo National Park: World heritage site for its rock formations and ancient cave drawings. Also the place where we camped and almost froze. Lesson there is camp only when prepared!

Hwange National Park: When we were there the facilities and infrastructure in the park had definitely seen better days, but that didn’t take away from the beautiful surroundings and the chance to see a pretty good array of wildlife.
