Kenya

This was the end to our East Africa trip so we squeezed in as much as we could. Another country with a ton of stuff to do and many famous attractions. We had a few weeks in Kenya but could easily have doubled that, not making it to places such as Mount Kenya or Lamu, both places I really wanted to see. But I guess it’s good to save some things for next time, right?!!

Maasai Mara: The landscape in this park is somewhat similar to the Serengeti (which makes sense since they are link), but at the time we were there, felt a bit less touristy. I suspect that was just our timing though!

Again we did very well with animal viewing, this time spotting cheetah on a couple of occasion, including young cheetah.

We also saw the other side to the migration which was at times a little brutal!

Walking with Maasai: This was actually a bit off the tourist trail, located in the remote village of Olorte among the Loita Hills and the ride there is often a bumpy one.

It is an eco-camp run by a group of Maasai elders, setup as an income generation activity with profits going back into the local community.

I’m sure there are other projects like this one in Kenya and if this one is a bit difficult to reach, see what else is around as the experience itself was worth the effort.

Nairobi: In the capital we visited the Kenyatta International Conference Centre which offers a great view of the city from the top of its tower. We also made a trip to the Karen Blixen Museum (despite having not read or seen the movie “Out of Africa”. And we ate incredibly well too :-)

Mombasa and Diani Beach: I remember the road to get to Mombasa from Nairobi was scary, a lot of dangerous driving. But obviously we made it there ok.

We spent a few days in and around Mombasa, visiting Fort Jesus and the “Old Town” and enjoying the beaches before heading south to what we considered the diamond of Kenya’s coast, Diani Beach.

We actually extended our stay by a few extra days (which we really didn’t have) because it was just so nice. If you love water sports this is a great place to visit. We just hung out though in our 50AUD a night cottage, ate fresh prawns and enjoyed the beach.
